Exmouth's Withycombe Raleigh C of E Primary School has been given a bench made entirely from recycled plastics.

It comes as part of a Devon County Council scheme and UK environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy's Ocean Recovery Project.

Created by Devon Contract Waste, the bench is made from items collected by the school's pupils during a beach clean, waste collected from beaches such as bottles, drums, crates, and nets, and other recycled plastics.

Withycombe Raleigh C of E Primary School Headteacher Emma Jones said: "We are delighted with our wonderful new bench and grateful to the Ocean Recovery Project for donating it to our school.

"We are very proud of the efforts our Year 5 children made during their beach clean and it is wonderful that some of the waste they collected has been reused to create something useful and that can be enjoyed by the whole school.

"Our children are becoming increasingly aware of the impact of plastic on our environment and are keen to make a difference both at home and school."

The county council will be offering similar beach clean days to schools in Devon next summer. Schools should email [email protected] to get involved.
