A seal has been amusing locals after being spotted on a kayak in the River Exe.

Local residents say the seal has been "hanging around" on kayaks and boats over the past few weeks near Hannaford's Quay in Topsham.

It was photographed by local resident and biosciences professor at the University of Exeter John Bryant on Tuesday (14 February).

He said: "I was not the first to see this seal - it has been hanging around for three or four weeks - but it only makes its appearance at high tide when it hauls itself out on to the moored kayak.

"This happens in about a third of the high tides and we don't know where it goes when it's not on the kayak.

"It is unusual for a seal to hang out for so long 10km upstream from the river's mouth."
