Exmouth Town Council has expressed its support for the Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill, which was initially presented in Parliament in September 2020 by Green Party MP Caroline Lucas.

Councillors voted by majority to support the bill in May 2021, having previously declared a climate emergency themselves almost two years prior in June 2019.

Exmouth Town Council is now focusing on climate-related issues in the community, such as looking into how to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and other environmental mitigation measures.

At a national level, they believe that the emissions linked to the production and import of consumable goods from overseas, and also the protection and conservation of habitats, should be of the highest priority and be addressed urgently.

Councillor Tim Dumper, Chair of the council's Climate and Ecological Emergency Working Party, said: "Other councils in Devon, including the county council, back this parliamentary bill.

"Crucially, it also proposes involvement by the public through work in a citizens' assembly. At a more local level, Devon County Council is already preparing for a

citizen's assembly to discuss difficult issues at the end of this month."
