Step 3 of the government's roadmap out of lockdown promises some of the biggest changes yet.

Here's our breakdown for what it will mean for Exmouth residents.

Step 3 (from Monday 17 May)

Social contact

- Gatherings of no more than 30 outdoors will be permitted

- Up to six people or two households will be allowed to meet indoors, with overnight stays allowed

- Social distancing measures will remain in place, and face masks must be worn unless you are exempt in shops and on transport

- Social distancing with family and friends will be a matter of personal judgement, but people are asked to be cautious.

Businesses

- Most businesses can reopen, including: indoor entertainment venues, such as children's play areas; hotels, hostels, and B&Bs; indoor adult sports groups and exercise classes

- Pubs, bars, cafes and restaurants will be allowed to serve customers indoors.

Education

- Face coverings are no longer recommended for pupils in secondary schools

- University students can return for in-person teaching.

Events

- Up to 30 people will be able to attend weddings, wakes, receptions, and other significant life events such as bar mitzvahs and christenings

- The number of people who can attend a funeral will now depend on the size of the building.

What will happen after this?

The next and final step will come into effect on 21 June, when the government hopes to remove all legal limits on social contact.
