An exotic animal rescue centre in Exmouth has renewed its appeal for help from the community, so that it can look after the many exotic animals in need of help and re-homing in East Devon.

CJS Exotics in Exmouth is looking to raise around £4,000 to expand its rescue centre and provide care for exotic animals that can no longer be looked after or have been abandoned.

The centre looks after snakes, lizards, geckos, frogs, invertebrates and most other exotic animals.

The family run business is led by Jon Spry, who has been fascinated by exotic animals since he was a youngster, he said: "We want our facility to have a shop front so that people can see what we do here.

"I've been working with exotic animals for pretty much my entire life, since January we've been inundated with animals.

"The money raised will be used to expand our facility, adapt enclosures, enrichment, vet treatment, bills and food for a whole host of different appetites."

Since January around 200 animals have been brought to the rescue centre. Around 40 per cent of those animals came from loving homes which were no longer able to support an exotic pet, while the other 60 per cent arrived at the centre in need of medical attention.

One of those animals was 17ft Burmese Python, an animal which very few rescue centres would be interested in due to its size. Jon decided to give the enormous snake a home to prevent it from being put down.

All the animals that arrive at the centre go straight to the vet for a full health check.

Work has already begun to expand the facility but the centre needs help overcoming some financial obstacles.

Jon said: "We are family run rescue service with over 10 years of experience in caring for a wide range of exotic animals.

"Put together from a passion for animals and a love of exotic species. We offer experienced housing for unwanted exotic animals, no questions asked.

"Our goal is to be able to save more of these exotic species and give them the forever home that they deserve."

He added: "Even something as small as £1 is one step closer to us reaching our goal, it would mean everything to us to be able to support these animals that are often in desperate need of help."
