People in the Littlemead and Rivermead areas of Exmouth are being offered free fruit trees by local conservation group Wild Exmouth.

The Constellation Orchard project is part of Wild Exmouth's Pledge for Nature scheme.

Residents of the Littlemead and Rivermead areas of Exmouth are being invited to take part in the project by planting a fruit tree in their garden.

The trees will compliment a new Orchard Trail which will run from Point in View Chapel down to town through Lower Halsdon Farm footpath and into Carter Avenue park.

You can choose a plum, apple, pear, cherry or almond tree or another fruit if you have a particular favourite and it is available.

The trees will grow to a maximum height of 4m and can be kept smaller.

A spokesperson for Wild Exmouth said: "Since 1960 we have lost over 60% of our orchards. Pollinators are in rapid decline.

"This project will, add colour and life to your garden, support pollinating insects and other animals that feed on and pollinate the fruit and help reduce carbon emissions by encouraging more local fruit growing and awareness of local food.

"In the first few years you may need to water your tree. It is also useful to learn how to do simple pruning on your tree to keep it healthy and in shape. We are working with local environmental groups to teach pruning skills in your area over the coming years."

You will then be contacted and a time will be arranged to come and plant the tree in January or February this year.

Then you go with the organisers to plant the next tree in your neighbourhood. Each tree will be planted by someone from the neighbourhood with the help of an experienced tree planter from Wild Exmouth.
