NCI Exmouth has issued a warning to beachgoers over the use of inflatables.

The volunteer coastwatch service said it has been 'stunned' by the number of adults who leave youngsters on wind-catching inflatables, describing them as 'great for the pool, but not our beaches'.

It has also warned that offshore winds are expected and the outgoing River Exe tide could see some find themselves in trouble on the water.

An NCI Exmouth spokesperson said: "Our volunteer watchkeepers have been on duty from 8am to 7.30pm every day, all week and will continue, even when the hot weather continues into next week.

"What we have noticed is more people coming to our beaches and bringing with them plastic inflatable toys. Blow-up rings, unicorns and other inflatable shapes are great for the pool, but not our beaches. With offshore winds expected and the outgoing River Exe tide, some can find themselves in difficulty.

"The RNLI beach lifeguards have a wind sock on their beach lookout showing you the strength of wind and its direction.

"We have been stunned at how many adults will leave young persons on wind-catching inflatables on our coast.

"PLEASE, keep inflatables for the pool."

If you see someone in difficulty on the coast or the sea you can call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
