A planning application for 54 retirement apartments and six retirement cottages in the centre of Exmouth has been submitted to East Devon District Council.
The development would be built on brownfield land (that is, land already developed; not greenfield) on Fore Street in place of the current building materials supplier Jewson.
Jewson is reportedly "looking to consolidate their provision within Exmouth at the Withycombe Road store" and there would be no job losses as all existing staff would be transferred there.
The proposed development would see 54 new one- or two-bedroom retirement apartments with communal facilities, vehicular access, car parking and landscaping, as well as six chalet-style retirement cottages built.
It would also include three commercial units which "could be used for either small retail uses or as a start-up/ office space for a small business."
The application is currently awaiting a decision from the district council.
