Plans to build an "upside-down house" in the rear garden of an Exmouth property on Maer Lane have been submitted to East Devon District Council.

If approved, the proposals would see a detached three-storey dwelling with a parking area and double garage fronting onto Foxholes Hill constructed.

The sloping nature of the site means "a significant amount of the building will be set in the ground" with the living spaces on the upper floor and the bedrooms on the lower floors.

According to the planning documents, the plots to either side of the rear garden are occupied by dwellings, with Hillbrae (the Maer Lane property) being the only rear garden that has not been developed.

The new house would have a "traditional residential design approach". Foxholes Hill reportedly does not have a dominant architectural style.

The application is currently awaiting a decision from the district council.
