Police have asked the public to only dial 999 in an emergency due to high demand and "staffing challenges".

The force also urged people to use the non-emergency reporting tool on its website instead of calling 101.

A Devon and Cornwall Police spokesperson said: "Due to current demand and staffing challenges within the contact centre, we are asking for the public to only use 999 in an emergency.

"You may experience a delay whilst attempting to contact us on the non-urgent 101 number.

"Please where possible, can all other non-emergency matters be reported through the non-urgent reporting tool available via our website.

"We thank you for your understanding and co-operation."
