Preschool literacy classes, called 'Phonics with Robot Reg', are set to return tomorrow (Tues 20 April).

Run by primary school teacher Jessica Jenner, the classes aim to teach phonics and literacy skills to preschool children aged between three months and four years old.

The mascot Robot Reg is a popular feature, and children enjoy helping the robot speak properly.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, Phonics with Robot Reg will be run slightly differently this year to support parents as well as children.

Jessica said: "So much has changed in the last 13 months and we have realised that our classes do more than teach the foundations of reading and writing.

"They also provide a safe and supportive space for parents of young children. As a mum myself I know that being at home with a young child can feel isolating without being in a global pandemic.

"We recognise that our classes provide a vital service for parents who need to get out of the house and make friends in their community."

Another change made to the classes includes a focus on making sure parents understand how to help their children at home if there were to be another lockdown.

Jessica continued: "As well as teaching phonics we also teach fine and gross motor skills.

"People who come to classes sometimes think that we use playdoh and props for fun but it's also to help children develop the skills and muscle strength to be able to write.

"We have listened to what parents missed about the face to face classes and we are doing our best to make it the best experience for everyone that attends."

Classes will run from Tuesday 20 April in Exmouth, Lympstone, Topsham, and St Thomas in Exeter.
