Exmouth's St John Ambulance unit is appealing for more first aiders as dwindling membership is forcing the unit to turn away some events.

The town's St John Ambulance unit regularly provides first aid support at events in Exmouth and across East and Mid Devon.

Recently membership in Exmouth has dropped and the charity is appealing for more volunteer first aiders to help provide essential first response medical care.

Cadet Unit Manager, Victoria Atkins, said: "Our Exmouth unit has a long history supporting the town and its events from Exmouth Festival and Remembrance Day to the kite festival, to small fetes and horse events as well as working with other units and organisations at bigger events such as crowd first aid at Exeter Chiefs and the Mid Devon show.

"However with a dwindling membership we are now having to turn away events not only in Exmouth but also those in the surrounding area, this means some events can't go ahead and others are forced to go to other providers meaning the charity misses out.

"By having more trained first aiders we would be able to continue to cover events and be able to provide more community training and have members in the community with the training to be the difference when needed, such as during extreme weather conditions when we rolled out our 4x4s to help transport others and by having people in our community able to provide assistance when needed."

As a first aider at events you would help provide first aid at large and small events within the community.

You would be part of a team of volunteers delivering help where it is needed, dealing with anything from a sprained ankle to a cardiac arrest.

The experience you gain could lead to more advanced roles, including patient transport, cycle response, advanced first aid and emergency response.

If you decide to volunteer you will have access to a proper induction to volunteering with SJA and the training you need for the role you take on.
