The Deaf Academy is looking for new governors to play a key role in the foundation of a new academy in Exmouth.

In September the Deaf Academy will be moving into its 'new world class facility' in Exmouth.

Academy Governors will work collaboratively with the senior leadership team to provide the best possible education to the academy's students.

A spokesperson for The Deaf Academy explained: "We are a team of Deaf and hearing people who come together as the governing body of the Deaf Academy. From September 2020, the Academy will be moving to our new world class facility in Exmouth.

"Our new Deaf Academy has been designed both to inspire our young people and to meet their individual needs. It will set the benchmark for buildings which provide bi-lingual Deaf education and residential care in the UK.

"The Charity has been providing education for Deaf young people since 1826. The Deaf Academy is a non-maintained special school, college and residential care home for deaf young people aged 5-25, who learn and live in a bilingual environment of British Sign Language (BSL) and English.

"All our meetings are accessible to deaf and hearing people, via BSL interpreter/notetaker support, helping to ensure all voices are heard to help guide the next stage of development of this wonderful organisation."

The spokesperson added: "We are now looking to recruit four new Governors who would like to play a key role in helping the Deaf Academy enhance its position as a high-quality provider of Deaf education and care. Working collaboratively with our Senior Leadership Team you will help to drive issues at the strategic level to ensure the Academy is providing the best possible education and care for our students.

The academy is looking for governors with experience with deaf communities, British Sign Language, IT, finance, safeguarding, special needs education and education more generally.

The Deaf Academy welcomes application from D/deaf+ communities and hearing people over the age of 18, who can commit a few hours per month. Travel expenses are reimbursed.
