People in Exmouth will soon have the opportunity to walk on fire to show their support for the New Deaf Academy being built in the town.

The Santa Sizzle Firewalk is back for 2019 and will take place in The Strand on Saturday, December 7.

The Deaf Academy in Exeter is trying to raise £250,000 to build a brand new academy in Exmouth, delivering the 'world-class education and residential care that our inspiring students deserve'.

A spokesperson for The Deaf Academy said: "A firewalk may sound tough, but it is perfectly safe. All of our charity fire walkers will be trained, motivated and confident to walk across hot coals with a temperature of over 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit."

Fire walkers will receive full training an hour before they walk. The firewalk training seminar is conducted by Scott Bell of UK Firewalk, twice Guinness World Record Holder for greatest distance walked on fire.

Firewalkers will undergo training that lasts approximately one hour. During this time a fire will be lit and when it has burned to red hot embers it will be raked level and prepared for the walk. Firewalkers remove their footwear and one by one are invited to walk across the hot coals.

A spokesperson for UK Firewalk said: "The sensation of fire walking is described by some as walking on eggshells, or by others as walking on hot sand. Each walker has his or her own experience.

"Walkers have not been known to experience pain, and when the opportunity arises many firewalkers will choose to cross the coals more than once.

"There is no strenuous physical exercise involved. If you can walk normally then you should manage the Firewalk perfectly well. If you have any doubts please consult your GP before attending."
