Firefighters had to use hydraulic air bags to free a driver from their vehicle after a serious crash near Woodbury in the early hours of this morning.

The B3179 is closed in both directions this morning after a 'serious incident' at Globe Hill near Woodbury.

Fire crews from Topsham and Danes Castle, together with a heavy rescue vehicle and supporting appliance from Middlemoor in Exeter, were sent to the scene at around 1am after being alerted by paramedics that the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside.

Firefighters arrived on the scene quickly and used hydraulic air bags to, lift the vehicle in order to free the trapped driver.

Once the driver had been freed and the vehicle made safe the driver was handed over to paramedics and duty of care was left with Devon and Cornwall Police.

Broadway, B3179, remains closed at Globe Hill after the crash between Oakhayes Road and The Arch.

Motorists are advised to find an alternative route where possible.
