As we read daily about the tragic situation unfolding in Ukraine it does focus our hearts and minds on humanitarian measures that are required to make our communities better places to live and work in.

As readers will be aware, last October I wrote about the work of Littleham Community Fridge and this month I write about another organisation that works in the centre of Exmouth but it does also reach out to our Littleham community as well.

I refer to, of course, the work carried out by the Salvation Army (SA) in Exmouth.

Andrew Cutler, local community mission manager, said: "As both a church and a charity we are concerned for the individual whoever they are without discrimination.

"Although some of our work involves partnering and supporting other churches, charities and organisations to better serve our local community, a large proportion of our time is helping local people on a one-to-one basis.

"In addition, we extend a warm welcome, friendship and support to everyone, whether on Sunday mornings when we meet together, or at our weekly coffee morning or monthly lunch club or craft group, all in a safe and caring environment."

This humanitarian approach is just what is needed in these challenging times.

The SA has centres in Ukraine, and countries which share its border, including Russia, Moldova and Poland, with many of its personnel deployed on the front line.

Recently, in Exmouth town centre local SA personnel handed out envelopes containing sunflower seeds and prayers; the sunflower being the national flower of Ukraine.

Readers may ask: 'What was the purpose?' - to help people talk about what they are feeling and trying to process.

The Salvation Army Housing Association

One of the unique areas within SA which readers may know very little about is the Salvation Army Housing Association. It is a specialist provider of support and accommodation in the UK.

SAHA currently own 4100 units in 86 locations across the country, 3 of which are in Exmouth and Exeter.

This is very important for the Exmouth Community and is a good example of how voluntary organisations support our communities.

Its mission statement states that it aims to 'transform lives by providing solutions to homelessness and enabling people to develop and achieve their full potential'.

In these troubled times, such aims are to be applauded and encouraged.

You might ask the question: 'This is good, but what have they done in practice for their residents?'

Well, for example, in October it ran a campaign to raise awareness on safeguarding amongst its employees and residents.

In that month they focused on types of safeguarding concerns, where you can go for advice, and they did this through posters, podcasts and much more. So that is really positive and helpful.

Gifts for children

Other humanitarian areas which they help is in delivering the Christmas Present Appeal entitled 'Be a Star' by helping families experiencing difficulties by providing donated new, unwrapped toys and gifts for children who might not otherwise receive a Christmas present. The gifts are distributed through the children's centre, local schools, health visitors and other local churches to those in need.

Throughout the year it offers a 'Birthday Box' to help struggling families provide gifts for their children. This is wonderful and residents of Littleham may well have benefited from this appeal.

So, to conclude, it's really positive to see that when humanitarian action around the world is needed, both in the UK and abroad, the SA is ready to step in.
