Exmouth Town FC Veterans surged to the top of the league with a clinical 6-0 win against a lively Kentisbeare Veterans side, who arrived at The Archery Club ground in Exmouth on the back of two excellent victories.
With the pre-match words of Manager Tim Wright ringing in their ears, Exmouth immediately started on the front foot. Adam Turner and Chris Hooker were particularly lively during the opening exchanges, causing the Kentisbeare backline no end of problems,
Paul McMahon, Aaron Skinner, Chris Eynon and Chris Smith set out their defensive stall early, snuffing out some sharp Kentisbeare moves and slickly playing out from the back. This resulted in several early chances for Exmouth Vets, with Sam Schlaefli finishing tidily in the 18th minute after a devastating counter attack. Schlaefli doubled up shortly after to make it 2-0 in the 22nd minute.
Town continued to press, and in the 34th minute a sublime David O'Connor corner floated towards the head of Schlaefli, who knocked it back across goal in the direction of Ryan McManus. McManus bravely stole in for a header milliseconds before the keeper clattered into him, making the score 3-0.
Manager Tim Wright began rotating his team, using the quality on his subs bench to freshen things up. Adam Bond and Rich Higham were tigerish in midfield during the latter parts of the first half, delivering several hefty tackles that broke up Kentisbeare attacks. Schlaefli took advantage of this excellent midfield play, scoring his league leading 15th goal of the season and making it 4-0 before half time.
Wright continued to rotate his squad, and in the 51st minute the excellent Leigh Clark burst down the right hand side, driving the ball into the path of Darryl Nicholas. Nicholas cut in from the right and delicately dinked the ball past the oncoming goalkeeper making it 5-0.
Chances came thick and fast over the ensuing minutes, but finally Exmouth got their just desserts, when Schlaefli picked out Tim Wright, who coolly slotted at the back post following a perfectly timed run.
