NatWest has closed its Exmouth branch for good.

The bank announced in July it would close its Rolle Street branch today (Thursday 19 October), saying it had seen a 54 per cent decrease in counter transactions for personal customers between 2019 and 2023.

Seven personal customers, and 149 business customers, reportedly used the Exmouth bank on a regular basis in 2022.

A NatWest spokesperson said: "With the ease of mobile and online banking fewer people are coming into the bank.

"This means we've had to make some tough choices about which can stay open. So, we want to make sure that we keep the branches people are using most.

"We completely understand that online banking isn't right for everyone. Sometimes you want to chat things through with someone.

"We promise that you'll still be able to talk to one of our team either on the phone, by video or in one of our other branches.

"We're also here for anyone who'd like help in getting started with online banking or our app. As well as short, easy-to-follow how-to videos, we run online classes over Zoom. You'll find everything you need to know on our website natwest.com/onlinebanking."

The nearest NatWest branch is now on Exeter High Street. There are still four banks in Exmouth and also Post Offices which can perform some banking functions.

Exmouth's MP 'disappointed'

East Devon MP Simon Jupp (Nub News)

Conservative MP for East Devon Simon Jupp, whose constituency includes Exmouth, said: "I am disappointed that NatWest have decided to close their bank branch in Exmouth.

"One in five people in Exmouth are aged over 65, an age group that data shows tend to use a bank branch more often.

"I wrote to NatWest on behalf of residents to express my concerns about the planned closure and seek assurances on NatWest's plans for the branch's dedicated staff.

"NatWest has pointed to Exeter as its nearest available branch – a good 30-minute journey away that is fairly unrealistic for many customers to do regularly.

"Unfortunately, despite local opposition from its loyal customers, NatWest decided to press ahead with closure.

"That is why I've been in touch with the organisation behind banking hubs – LINK – to raise concerns about banking provision in Exmouth and push for a banking hub which are opened once the last bank in town closes."

'Sad to see yet another bank leave' - Exmouth councillor

Cllr Joe Whibley (Joe Whibley)

Councillor Joe Whibley, who represents the Exmouth Town ward as an independent at district and town level, said: "It's sad to see yet another bank leave Exmouth.

"While I acknowledge they have to make ends meet, I strongly believe that alternative measures such as banking hubs and mobile banks should replace closed branches. The Post Office does offer some alternative provision, but can't yet do everything your high street bank can.

"It must be galling for the staff there, some of whom will have given years of service, to have their jobs pulled from under them. I hope NatWest are supporting them appropriately."
