Exmouth's 'Rusty Pole' was featured on Have I Got News For You on Friday (28 April).

The sewage vent pipe had a cult following as a joke tourist attraction before it was removed earlier this month.

The third episode of the 65th series of the BBC quiz panel show was hosted by Richard Ayoade. In the 'Strength-o-Meter of News' round, the pole made its appearance.

Ayoade said: "[Locals] are furious, it stood on an Exmouth nature reserve since 1909, and according to ITV News has been 'catapulted to legendary status'.

"On Tripadvisor, there is a suggested visiting duration of one to two hours."

Exmouth Nub News' local history columnist Mike Menhenitt was then shown in a clip talking to ITV West Country.

He said: "I remember it from my childhood here in the 1950s playing here with it.

"It's such a shame. Why has it gone? It's a landmark, perhaps South West Water were not aware of the importance of this pole to the people of the town."
