Exmouth, Western Australia was the best place on Earth to see a total solar eclipse on Thursday (20 April).

The remote Australian town, which has the same name as its Devon counterpart, was plunged into darkness for around a minute during the event at 11.27am (4.27am UK time).

It was part of a "hybrid eclipse", the next of which is expected to happen in 2031.

Rick Tonnello of Gravity Space Centre told 9 News Australia live at the scene: "That is the most incredible thing I've seen.

"It is just absolutely stunning. I'm lost for words, that's a first!

"It is just so weird and unnatural, but it's an incredible experience."

Exmouth is located at the tip of the North West Cape of Western Australia, almost 800 miles north of Perth and 2,000 miles southwest of Darwin.

The climate is hot and semi-arid, with temperatures often over 40 degrees in summer and 25 in winter.

A tourist hotspot, the population more than doubles in the high season.
