David Poor is standing for election as a Liberal Democrat to represent the Exmouth Littleham ward at East Devon District Council.
----------
Married with two sons, I live in Exmouth.
After retiring, I volunteered for the Citizens Advice Bureau in another area where I gave support people in urgent need and help.
I am also a trustee of a London-based national charity helping staff in need.
Previously a councillor for 12 years elsewhere in the UK, I have been a council cabinet member for housing and a local Liberal Democrat housing spokesman.
I was first elected to Exmouth Town Council in 2019 and take a keen interest in many aspects of Littleham life, from planning development to supporting Littleham’s Community Fridge.
I think Exmouth is fortunate to have good independent shops but believe that the towns needs special help to flourish.
I am concerned that we could lose access to a special place for us in Littleham, namely our Maer Valley which is a wonderful, calm green space for all of us to enjoy. We need these green spaces which act as Green Lungs for us providing exercise, and helping our health and well being. We need more social and affordable homes as well as the infrastructure that goes with these homes else our town risks becoming a dormitory town for Exeter.
The offhand and blasé way our water company and government copes with our sewage crisis is wrong, the company profits and shareholder dividends should come after the much-needed repairs and improvements to our antiquated sewage system and after they have paid for the damage being done to our roads by their sewage tankers.
Finally, I have been pleased to see the way the Lib Dems have worked closely with other groups, independents and Greens in a constructive way for the good of Exmouth and East Devon and hope that we can carry on doing so again.
A good example of this new way of working is revamping and safeguarding our public toilets after decades of neglect from the Conservatives to make sure they remain open.
