Membership of the Conservative Party in East Devon has increased by 30% this year, according to the local party chairman.

The East Devon Conservative Association held their AGM using Zoom technology this year, like many organisations having to adapt to new ways of communication with members at the moment.

The virtual meeting was a 'great success' with many members attending.

East Devon MP Simon Jupp also attended the meeting and spoke to the group from his home in Sidmouth. Retiring President Tim Wood chaired the AGM from his home in Exmouth and Chairman Bruce De Saram managed the gathering from the East Devon Conservative offices also in Exmouth.

Tim Wood opened the meeting by talking about how much he had enjoyed his time in office and thanked everybody for their support, particularly during the last election when Simon Jupp was elected with over 50% of the vote following Sir Hugo Swire's decision to stand down from the House of Commons.

The Treasurer, Allan William's, presented the accounts stating that membership was up over 30% with a resulting increase in funds.

Officers were elected for the coming year with the Chairman, Bruce De Saram; Deputy Chairman (Political), Peter Sullivan; Deputy Chairman (Membership) Caroline Thomas and Allan Williams, Treasurer re-elected for another term. Jill Elson MBE was elected as a Vice President following her 'remarkable service' to the association over many years.

Simon Card OBE from Sidmouth was elected the new President of the Association. He said: "It was a great honour to follow in Tim Wood's distinguished footsteps and work with Simon Jupp MP in continuing the good work that the Conservative Party had undertaken in the constituency since 1899, one of the oldest constituencies in the country.

"I am delighted that Simon will soon be opening his new office in Exmouth where constituents will be able to make contact directly".

East Devon Conservative Association Chairman, councillor Bruce De Saram, said: "I am delighted and honoured to have been re-elected to the role of Chairman by the members for another year and look forward to working with Simon Jupp MP and the Executive Committee to deliver the Conservative messages throughout East Devon".

Simon Jupp, MP for East Devon, said: "The significant increase in party membership in East Devon is brilliant news ahead of elections next year and beyond. I have been contacted by many new members who can't wait to get involved. I look forward to working with members to strengthen our support locally and deliver for East Devon."
