Eileen Wragg is standing for election as a Liberal Democrat to represent the Exmouth Town ward at East Devon District Council.

She is currently a councillor at district level.

----------

Born in Exmouth, I have served on Exmouth Town, East Devon District and Devon County Councils for 27 years and am a past Mayor of Exmouth.

Educated at Exmouth Grammar School, I later studied at the University of Plymouth, graduating with a BA Combined Honours degree in 1995.

I was drawn into politics in the 1990s when I successfully started a campaign against South West Water's unfair metered charges, which became the focus of national media attention.

After subsequent government reviews, an annual reduction £50 in household bills was ordered which is ongoing.

Having gained considerable experience as a councillor, I have helped numerous people over many years with housing, planning and personal issues.

Three years ago as leader of the Liberal Democrats at EDDC, I suggested to the leader of the East Devon Alliance that they form a group with the Greens and some independents.

They agreed and so the Democratic Alliance was born, working together for the good of East Devon residents rather than political groups.

They have worked very well together, and would like to continue doing so in the future, thereby giving the public an alternative from the Conservatives, who had previously ruled the district for 45 years.

Real progress has been made with a focus very much on the Environment, Economy, Housing and Planning.

With a wealth of experience on all three councils, I am now Chair of Planning at EDDC, and would like to continue my work in ensuring that decisions for appropriate development are made, which has not always been the case in the past.

Also, with the government's revenue support grant to local councils having disappeared, innovative ways of raising revenue have to be found to ensure that services run smoothly.

For instance, on the Conservatives' own admission, they neglected to address car parking charges for many years, so this council took the bold decision to make a modest increase.

EDDC car parking permits represent extremely good value at just £120 per year, and the car parks are often filled to capacity, so not an unpopular decision.

The Lower Otter Restoration Project is hugely important environmentally, which was given approval under the present administration and has been given national recognition.

It is vital to continue with such works to ensure that East Devon's beautiful coast and countryside are protected for future generations to appreciate and enjoy.

Yet another reason for me being keen to help carry on with the good progress being made, and why I would greatly appreciate your vote on 4 May.
